Coaching Staff

Tim Benz

Tim played youth hockey for the Glenview Stars and Glenbrook South High School. Tim was a star hockey player at Glenbrook South High School, where he was Team Captain, MVP, All- Conference, All-Area and All-State his senior year. Tim was selected to the prestigious Chicago High School Showcase Team as both a junior and senior. Tim was also a member of the Football and Baseball teams at GBS. In baseball, he was a three-year starter on the Glenbrook South Varsity baseball team and was Team Captain, MVP, All-Conference and All-Area. In football, Tim was a two-year Varsity starter, Team Captain, MVP and All-Conference selection. After graduating in 2005, Tim played collegiately in the ACHA for DePaul University and professionally for teams in the AAHA and FHL.

Tim brings 11 years of coaching experience beginning in 2010 with the Glenview Stars. At the Stars (2010-2017), Tim coached teams from U8 Girls to Bantam Central States. In 2012 Tim was named the Director of Player Development and Skills for the Stars. In 2013 Tim was named head coach of the Glenbrook Girls hockey team. After that season, Tim joined the Loyola Gold coaching staff in 2014 as an assistant coach. In his final two years at Loyola he was named a Co-Head Coach. In 2017 Tim was named Hockey Director and Head Varsity coach of Saint Viator High School. During his time at Saint Viator the Lions have won multiple league championships, multiple final 4 and state final appearances at both the Varsity and JV levels. In 2018 Tim was named AHAI coach of the year.

In addition to his hockey director role at Saint Viator, in 2020 Tim was named Hockey Director of the Wilmette Jr. Trevians, formerly known as the Wilmette Braves. Tim oversees a youth program of roughly 400 players which includes a boys travel program, girls travel program, a house program and a special education hockey program.

In addition to his on-ice expertise, Tim is also an off-ice coach and program director. He served as Director for The Ultimate Athlete where he worked with hockey, football, lacrosse and baseball players in explosiveness, speed and strength training. Tim resides in Libertyville Illinois with his wife, Brett.

Hockey Director & Varsity Head Coach

Steve Funteas

Steve has coached for nearly 30 years at almost every level of amateur hockey. Steve’s coaching career started with the Glenview house league and moved to coaching squirt, bantam and midget teams at the A, AA and CSDHL levels of play. Steve was the head coach of the Buffalo Grove High School Boys’ Varsity team for 7 years and had 4 Final Four finishes. Steve also coached the DePaul University Men’s collegiate team. In addition to his vast coaching experience, Steve has attained a rare Level 5 Masters coaching certification from USA Hockey and attended Roger Nielsen’s coaching camps in Windsor, Ontario.


Varsity Assistant Coach

John Sclafini

John grew up in the Chicago area and attended Fenwick High School where he played three years of Varsity hockey. John went on to attend St. Norbert College as an NCAA Division III hockey player, and later received his Masters’ from Northwestern University. After college, John began coaching hockey, which included many successful experiences at the High School level including Fenwick, Fremd, and Deerfield. John has also coached youth hockey at the NIHL Elite and CSDHL levels including the Flames, Northbrook, and currently with the Northwest Chargers. 

John is entering his 23rd season as a head coach and 25th season as a coach. He currently resides in Hoffman Estates with his wife Allison, and his three children Ava, Joey, and Vinny. Ava is on U14 National Top Flight Volleyball team out of Elgin and will be a freshman at St. Viator this fall. Joey is a PW Minor and Vinny is on Mite 1 both at the Chargers. 

Director of Player Advancment & JV Head Coach

Jason Hogan

Jason grew up in the metro-Boston area where he played 3 years of hockey at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts. Jason also played with a Massachusetts high school select team that traveled to Europe to play in several tournaments. After prep school, he attended and played collegiately at Lake Forest College, where he graduated with a double major in finance and studio art. Jason has coached all levels between mite and midget and has led teams at Team Illinois, Evanston, Winnetka, and the Northwest Chargers. This past season, Jason was the head coach for the Pee Wee Major Central States Team. 

Jason resides in Palatine with his wife, Sarah, and his two sons, Max and Finn. Sarah is an assistant principal at an elementary school in Mt. Prospect and is highly involved in the community. Max has competed in several Special Olympic state events and has won several gold medals in soccer, basketball, and track. Finn plays travel soccer for the Palatine Celtic Premier Team and also plays hockey on the Chargers Pee Wee Major Central States Team. Jason looks forward to continuing his coaching career at St. Viator and becoming involved in the school community.

JV Assistant Coach

Tony Martino

Tony is the new Goalie Coach for the Saint Viator Hockey Club. He has a wide array of experiences that extends from NCAA and pro hockey as a player to youth hockey and working in the National Hockey League. Martino who attended NHL camp with the Quebec Nordiques (present day Colorado Avalanche) was a 5 time All Star and Goalie of the Year in his 10 seasons of pro hockey in North America and Europe. After retiring as a player, Martino went on to coach at all levels of professional and junior hockey. Martino was the Quebec/Eastern Scout for the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL) and is currently the U.S. Scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL and Assistant Coach / Goalie Coach for the nationally ranked Lake Forest College Men’s Hockey Team. Previously, he was with the London Knights of the OHL from 2010-2016. He was a part of the staff that won a Memorial Cup in 2016.
